Gout Suffering Today

“Who Wants To End
Their Gout Suffering Today?”

“Are you tired of the inflammation, swollen joints and agonizing pain?
Keep reading – this gout management solution may help you.”
Gout is known as the “disease of kings” but it certainly does not make you feel like royalty. When a gout attack hits, the pain is severe and you feel out of control.
With a gout attack, life goes on hold when that outbreak happens. Those who suffer know all too well the crippling pain – and know they would do just about anything to make the pain stop.
It is imperative that a gout attack is treated, because when left untreated or unmanaged the gout pain and severity will only get worse. Eventually, if left untreated it can transform into chronic gout which affects multiple joints at the same time. It can even lead to kidney stones, kidney damage and hypertension in some cases.
Prior to beginning treatment, have a visit with your family doctor to talk about your different options, which will likely include prescription drugs, diet and exercise.

Gout Defined

Gout has been called the “disease of kings” as it was associated by the overindulgence of rich foods. This is only part of the issue; however as gout is also related to obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other diseases of this nature.
Affecting mostly men, gout is actually nine times more common in men than with women, particularly over the age of 40. Polynesians are especially prone to the condition.
Gout is the result of  an excess of uric acid in the bloodstream. Normally, uric acid remains in the bloodstream and then filtered out by the kidneys.
But, when there is an excess of this uric acid and the kidneys are unable to remove all of the uric acid, it then crystallizes in the joints which in turn, causes visible and distinct inflammation and of course an enormous amount of pain for the gout sufferer. In combination with obesity, heart disease or hypertension, a gout attack can lead to increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

How Do I Know Its Gout?

inflamation due to gout
Normally, gout attacks just one joint at a time: typically the big toe, knee, ankle (and occasionally) the kidneys. It  usually  appears in areas where the flow of blood is the slowest.
inflamation due to goutIt starts with a sudden, intense pain in the joint area combined with swollen, reddened and shiny skin around the joint as well as extreme tenderness in the area. A fever is also common with the condition, with temperatures reaching as high as 101°F.

How Do I Treat My Gout?

Gout can be treated in a few different ways. One natural remedy includes cherry juice (discovered to reduce the risk of gout in a study done in the 1950s). Also, research supports the notion of taking a folic acid supplement. Doing this may reduce levels of uric acid in the blood; however this is yet to be confirmed. Another typical treatment includes the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory prescription drugs.
Gout can as well be treated through lifestyle and diet changes. Weight-loss, good hydration, limiting alcohol consumption, and limiting the intake of foods high in purines (which the body converts to uric acid) can all help prevent a gout outbreak.
It is also important to mention that a weight-loss program should be gradual and safe, as a rapid weight-loss (starvation diet) can actually raise the levels of uric acid in the blood.
Foods extremely high in purines:
  • Mussels
  • Herring
  • Yeast
  • Sardines
Foods moderately high in purines:
  • Anchovies
  • Liver
  • Bacon
  • Salmon
  • Turkey
  • Scallops
  • Kidneys
  • Goose
  • Haddock
Also to note, vegetables such as beans, peas, cauliflower, spinach and mushrooms are high in purines but studies have shown that gout sufferers do not experience increased risks of outbreaks when consuming these foods.
As well, even though the majority of foods associated with gout have a high protein content, studies have shown that diets such as the Atkins or South Beach diet have no effect on gout outbreaks. Overall, the diet associated with gout attacks is the same diet related to heart disease.
Wow. That is a lot of information to process. So besides monitoring diet is there anything else that can be done to control gout? Absolutely.
