Carbohydrates are a type of macronutrient found in foods and drinks. Sugar is a carbohydrate. The body treats sugar in the same way that it treats any carbohydrate: insulin, glucagon and epinephrine begin their work. It is insulin that is responsible for regulating the level of sugar in the blood. Select complex carbohydrates that release sugar into your bloodstream more slowly, creating less of a spike in blood sugars. Don't remove carbohydrates altogether, as your body requires them as fuel. Your brain is especially reliant upon carbohydrates for nourishment. You should, however, choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables and foods that are higher in fiber.
